In Los Angeles on Friday, John G. Avildsen, the Oscar-winning director of the original Rocky with Sylvester Stallone, passed away after battling pancreatic cancer at the age of 81. Following the surprising success of Rocky, Avildson went on to craft more audience-pleasing underdog stories, like 1984s The Karate Kid. At the time of his death, Avildsen was working on his first film in nearly two decades, Nate & Al starring Richard Dreyfuss and Martin Landau. Among those paying tribute to Avildsen was Rocky star Sylvester Stallone who posted a farewell on Instagram with a caption reading “I’m sure you will soon be directing Hits in Heaven- Thank you, Sly.”
